Lucas explains Klopp approach

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp will subject his players to some 'very intense' demands during pre-season, ex-Reds midfielder Lucas says.

Lucas is set to accompany the squad on its pre-season trip to Singapore as one of the designated 'legends' who will take part in associated events.

Now retired, the Brazilian played for the Reds between 2007 and 2017, which means he was present for Klopp's first pre-season in charge following his October 2015 arrival.

And he recalls that Klopp asks a lot of his players in the summer months because he feels it's the most valuable training time of the campaign.

"Wake up, breakfast, training, come back, sleep a bit and go in for the afternoon," he told liverpoolfc.com. "It's basically that. It's very intense.

"As we know, Jürgen's teams play with intensity that is different to another manager. But the first pre-season was really tough. Lots of running. Especially in the first 10 days, two weeks, I think it's the most difficult.

"Jürgen likes to work as after the pre-season you don't have too much time to train, so it's a really important part of the season."

The non-international members of Liverpool's squad will reconvene on July 8, and then the rest will trickle back after their three weeks off.

The Reds will head to Germany for a training camp and while there, will face Bundesliga 2 sides Karlsruher SC and Greuther Fürth.

During their time in Singapore in late July and early August, they will take on relegated Leicester City and reigning Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich.

Carvalho jets off to Germany

Liverpool has granted Fábio Carvalho permission to fly to Germany and undergo a medical today ahead of his loan move to RB Leipzig, David Lynch of Football Insider reports.

Carvalho will join the Bundesliga outfit on a season-long loan, but there will be no option to buy after Liverpool refused to include one.

Leipzig also submitted a bid to sign the player permanently for around $13m (£10m/€12m), but it was rejected by the Reds, who paid $9.8m (£7.7m/€8.9m) to sign him from Fulham last summer (via This is Anfield).

Lynch has previously reported that there have already been 'tentative' discussions over the possibility of the 20-year-old spending the 2024/25 campaign in Germany
