Hello and welcome to football.london's live Ballon d'Or ceremony blog!

What a year of football we have had. After Lionel Messi and Argentina were crowned champions of the world in Qatar, the world's best players have battled it out for what is the most prestigious individual award in 

On this year's shortlist, which is based on performances over the season, rather than a calendar year, is an array of quality players. The Premier League dominates the list with 14 players of the 30. Messi is the strong favourite to win his eighth Ballon d'Or after his heroics for his nation in the World Cup.

The Men's Ballon d'Or isn't the only award being handed out, with the Feminin Ballon d'Or winner also being announced. Chelsea's Sam Kerr, Guro Reiten and Millie Bright have been named on the shortlist alongside Arsenal's Amanda Ilestedt and Kate McCabe. Barcelona and Spain ace Aitana Bonmati is the hot favourite to win her first Ballon d'Or.

Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham is many people's favourite to become the first Englishman to win the Kopa Trophy. The annual prize is awarded to the best Under-21 player and Bellingham is joined by the likes of Jamal Musiala, Xavi Simons, Eduardo Camavinga and Rasmus Hojlund in the nominations.

And finally, the Yashin Trophy will be awarded to the best goalkeeper. Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale has been nominated but Aston Villa No.1 Emiliano Martinez has been heavily backed to win

Barcelona goalscorer Robert Lewandoski finishes 12th while Mohamed Salah finishes in 11th.

The Kopa Trophy will be the fourth award of the evening in Paris. It's presented to the best performing player under the age of 21 and over the years, some superstars have been crowned.


Kylian Mbappe won the award in 2018 before Matthijs de Ligt's performances for Ajax saw his crowned the following years. Barcelona duo Pedri (2021) and Gavi (2022) have won the last two years.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka is among the 30 players nominated for the Men's Ballon d'Or award.


The England international scored 15 goals and assisted 11 in 48 appearances for the Gunners last season. His performances helped Mikel Arteta's men take Manchester City the distance in the Premier League title race.

How to watch the ceremony

The Ballon d'or winner will be crowned tonight at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.


The ceremony is set to begin around 8pm BST and will be broadcast live on French newspaper L’Equipe’s YouTube channel and website.

The 36-year-old scored seven goals to help La Albiceleste win their third world title - includng two in the final against France. Messi already holds the record with the most amount of Ballon d'Ors - with his seventh coming in 2019.
